Pella
PEllaHas curiosity ever tempted you, driving on the N14 from Springbok to Upington, to follow the indicator “Oasis in the Wilderness”? If yes, Pella, surrounded by so many impressive mountains and its majestic cathedral, has welcomed you with its very special atmosphere. Tourists from all over the world hardly believe that this House of God where they are now, comfortably sitting listening attentively to its history told by the Sisters, was built over seven years by our Oblate Fathers who were only “novice” bricklayers. How many times did the tourists not exclaim in admiration: “This is a work of love!” The visit of the museum and Bishop Jean-Marie  Simon’s room is very often followed by a cup of tea or coffee at the mission. If you follow the tasty smell of our own oven backed date breads, “Apfelstrudel” and ginger muffins, you will not be disappointed! We not only offer our “ministry of hospitality” at any time to tourists but the “Bishop Simon Center” invites different local Church groups from the “Keimoes-Upington diocese (link) for retreats, conferences and meetings.  Our small religious community feels very proud to continue the spread God’s love in this place which welcomed our first French missionaries in 1882 and which we consider the birthplace of our Congregation in Southern Africa.
